Women – Enjoy Watching Football

Ladies, football is not just 22 guys, in football gear and football uniforms trying to hurt each other, but a game requiring great athletic ability, and sophisticated plays, both on Offense and Defense.
This simple explanation of football will not only help you enjoy watching football on TV, with your spouse, significant other or boyfriend, it will increase your enjoyment when you watch your youngster’s football games!
The game of football is one of the best sports to watch these days. The game starts at the 50 yard line in the middle of the field, with a coin toss by the referee. The captains of both teams are present and the captain of the Home Team calls heads or tails when the coin is in the air. The winner of the coin toss can elect to receive the ball and be on Offense, or kick-off the ball, from the 35 yard line and be on Defense.
After the kick-off returner is tackled and the referee spots the ball the players get in position and wait for the ball to be snapped, or hiked to the quarterback. Offensive players can not move until the ball is snapped. If an offensive player moves before the snap the referee will throw a yellow flag and call a penalty for a false start, which results in the offensive team losing 5 yards of field position. If a defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped he will be penalized for encroachment and the offensive team gains 5 yards. There are several more penalty situations that arise during the game, like holding, unnecessary roughness, face mask grabbing, and pass interference.
If you are watching on television, the announcers will describe why the penalty was called. Also on television you will see a blue line which denotes the line of scrimmage and a yellow line that is the estimated first down yardage needed. Also, the team name on the bottom or to the right of the score shown is the Home Team.
Each team on offense gets four downs to move the ball ten yards closer to the other team’s end zone before the fourth down and get another 1st down. If they fail to make ten yards, the fourth down is usually used to kick, or punt the ball back to their opponent. They have the option on the 4th down to try to make the yards needed, or kick a field goal, which is worth 3 points. If they fail, the other team takes over on offense, where the ball was spotted.
The quarterback is the person who decides what he is going to do with the football. He can pass it to an eligible receiver, or hand it off to a running back abercrombie and fitch , to try to run it. Many quarterbacks wear football gloves to help them keep a good grip on the ball. They play in all weather conditions, so they need to make sure they can keep a good grip on the ball. The referees call the spot of the ball, or call a penalty, as they see it. When a coach disagrees with a referees’ call, he has the right to challenge and throw a red flag down. When there is a red flag challenge, the referees’ look at the play on the instant replay camera, in slow motion, to make sure they made the correct call. If the coach that threw the red flag is over ruled, his team will lose a time out. Each team gets 3 time-outs per half. The game is played in 15 minute quarters and at the end of the second quarter a half-time break is taken.
The desire is for the offensive team to cross the defensive team’s goal line to score a touchdown. A touchdown is worth 6 points and they get a chance to try for an extra 1 point, known as a PAT (point after touchdown). The field-goal kicker kicks the ball that is spotted on the 2 yard line, but he is kicking from about the 12 yard line, which makes the kick have to travel 22 yards because the goal-posts are ten yards behind the goal line. If they decide to run the ball for the extra point and cross the goal line they get 2 points. If the score is tied at the end of regulation another 15 minute quarter is started with the same coin toss as described above. The first team to score wins. This is called sudden-death.
Each team wears football uniforms of different colors. This helps them see their players when they are throwing a pass, or running the ball. They have special football gear to protect their body. They have to wear football cleats to help them run and hold their position on the turf.
